Is it really Lip-Reading or Lip-Guessing?
I was having a group conversation with three people a couple of minutes ago; all I understood was:
“s_ _ _ __ done _ _ ay_ _ _ _ _ today _ _f _ _ _ n. Sci_ _n”
I said I’m sorry, can you repeat that again.
“this _ _ _ w_e_ done _ _ _ _this _ _ _ _ _ day _ _ _ f _ _ _ _ _ n _. _ _ _ Science?”
It does not make any sense, right?
I guess she was probably saying, “we’re done with this for today” or at least something close to this. I am not sure where the word “science” came from.
I wanted to ask her to repeat what she was saying for the third time, but I could not because it was a group conversation, and she probably wouldn’t want to repeat herself again.
A guy was standing next to me with a beard.
He said: “_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ _ _ _ “
Suddenly, everyone was laughing. I didn’t know why. So I laughed lightly. All I saw was his beard movements. I hoped that the conversation would end soon.
And another guy was standing near the sunlight.
He said: “_ _s _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _p _ _ _ _ _. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ _ _ _ __ _ u_ _ _”
I couldn’t see his lips movement because I had to turn my head facing the sunlight to see what he was saying.
I just smiled and nodded my head.
Well, this is how a daily conversation is like for 466 million people and me.
Just because someone with a hearing disability can read-lip do not assume that they can understand every word someone is saying verbally because LIP READING IS NOT READING like reading this article.
Let me repeat it, LIP-READING IS NOT READING. It must be essential because I mention it twice, right?
When you are trying to lip-read a conversation, you cannot see everything clearly. The quantity of light, facial hair, facial expression, body movement, and accent can affect someone's ability to lip-read.
Even the best lip-reader can only understand 25-30% of a conversation.
Someone once said it is called LIP-GUESSING. I could not agree more with them.
Now, can you lip-guess what she is saying?
How about lip-guessing this group conversation?
